Sound specialist Fred Hynes was a five-time Academy Award winner in the Best Sound Category, He received his first Oscar in 1955 for his work on "Oklahoma." His other Academy Awards were for "South Pacific" (1958), "The Alamo" (1960), "West Side Story" (1961) and "The Sound of Music" (1965). He also received a nomination in 1963 for "Cleopatra."

He was associated with the Todd A-O sound department for more than thirty years.
Seven Academy Award nominations, five of them resulting in Oscars, are credited in the Academy's records to Todd-AO Sound Department, Fred Hynes, Sound Director.
Hynes received the Academy's Medal of Commendation in 1980.
