Donald C. Rogers was senior vice president of post production
services at Warner Bros. when he was voted the Gordon E. Sawyer
Award.
A member of the Academy's Scientific and Technical Awards
Committee since 1962, Rogers served as chairman seven times.
He also represented the Sound Branch on the Academy's Board
of Governors for 16 years.
A 43-year industry veteran, Rogers was a member of the sound
crews on "The King and I" and "South Pacific,"
films which received Oscars in the sound cateogry. As head
of the Todd-AO Camera Department, he was directly involved
with the development of the first lightweight 65mm production
camera as well as the Todd-AO 35 mm wide-scope lens system.
From 1971-1992, Rogers was director of technical operations
at the Samuel Goldwyn Studios during which time its sound
department received 23 Academy Award nominations leading to
15 Oscars.
Rogers was also instrumental in the technical design of the
Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater, and presided over the committee
that provided a complete renovation of the theater's sound
systems in 1992.
