Erich von Stroheim's 1919 debut as director, writer and star firmly established him as one of the most important directors of the silent era. This film was the first million dollar earner for Universal Pictures, and the advertising campaign burnished the legend of von Stroheim as "The Man You Love to Hate." Indeed, he plays a cad - an Austrian cavalry officer who tempts the neglected wife of a vacationing surgeon. The dramatic mountain top climax, in which the husband confronts von Stroheim, was shot on location in California. Blind Husbands (1919): Presenter: Carl Laemmle; Director: Erich von Stroheim; Assistant Director: K.C. Stewart; Scenario: von Stroheim (based on the book "The Pinnacle" by von Stroheim); Titles: Lilian Ducey; Camera: Ben F. Reynolds; Editors: Frank Lawrence, Eleanor Fried. Universal Film Mfg. Co. Preservation print from an original nitrate print from the collection of the Museum of Modern Art. 68 min.
