For the last five years, well-known Los Angeles-based photographer Art Streiber has had something that most of us can only dream about: an “All Access” pass at the Academy Awards. Streiber’s camera has captured moments that never appear on television, from the epic undertaking that is the building of the bleachers and the delivery of the giant Oscars on Hollywood Boulevard, to those first moments alone together (often in an elevator or a corridor backstage) between an Oscar winner and his or her statuette.

120 stunning color photographs will be on display from each of the last five Oscar ceremonies. The imagery includes solitary backstage moments with the various hosts (Steve Martin, Whoopi Goldberg, Billy Crystal, Chris Rock),rehearsals by musical performers (Bjork, Sting, Paul Simon, dancers and stars of Chicago), and presenters (Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz and Robin Williams among them). Teamsters and various production details, like the placards showing where the stars will be sitting (they help the cameramen rehearse) are documented with the same intimate eye that has captured moments of humor and canoodling between celebrities rehearsing their segments. Oscar winners photographed in the wings include Adrien Brody, Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman, Hilary Swank, Peter O’Toole, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Julia Roberts, Robert Redford, Charlize Theron, Jamie Foxx, Tim Robbins, Renée Zellweger, Sean Penn and Clint Eastwood.

Art Streiber has been photographing for entertainment companies and magazines in Los Angeles since 1993, specializing in reportage, travel and portrait work. He regularly contributes to such publications as Vanity Fair, W, Wired, Time, Entertainment Weekly, Forbes, Town&Country, Esquire and Elle. A small selection of his behind-the-scenes Oscar photographs has appeared annually in Premiere Magazine; this year the feature will be published in In Style. Streiber has also photographed for a number of feature film one-sheets, including The 40 Year-Old Virgin, Running with Scissors and Accepted.

Once again this year, the tents go up and the carpet goes down for the 78th Annual Academy Awards. In the meanwhile, come to the Academy’s Grand Lobby Gallery to see what you’ve been missing.
