As part of the Academy’s Gold Standard screening series, and in connection with the current Fourth Floor Gallery exhibition “Movies on the Mind,” the Academy presents special evening gallery hours and a double feature of psychological explorations on film.

In this haunting and poetic story, a nurse, Alma (portrayed by Bibi Andersson), cares for an actress, Elisabeth (Liv Ullmann), who, despite being healthy in all other respects, has withdrawn to the point of being mute.  Alma constantly speaks to Elisabeth, but without response; she soon finds that her mind and personality are being subsumed by her mute patient’s.  Director Ingmar Bergman received nine Oscar® nominations in his career, as a writer, director or producer.  He was the recipient of the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 1970.

Director Spike Jonze and writer Charlie Kaufman (both of whom were Oscar-nominated, along with actress Catherine Keener) teamed up for this bizarre combination of comedy, drama and fantasy that imagines the discovery of a portal into the mind of actor John Malkovich (playing himself).  Craig (John Cusack), a puppeteer  who is working at a dull office job in Manhattan, joins with his co-worker Maxine (Keener) to sell 15-minute trips into Malkovich’s brain.  Craig sees the enterprise as the key to his future success in his career and with Maxine, but then Malkovich discovers what’s happening and tries to stop them.
